Sovereign, Transparent, No Vendor Lock-In
Inspect the source, model configuration, and complete workflow. Build reproducible studies whose assumptions and transformations can be reviewed rather than hidden behind a closed application boundary.
Manta is an enterprise-grade, open-source platform for using multiple energy system modelling frameworks, orchestrating workflows, and exploring results. It is built for teams that want a trustworthy, user-friendly, and sovereign alternative to proprietary planning software.
If your team is using or evaluating PLEXOS®, PROMOD®, or other commercial energy market and production cost modelling platforms, Manta offers a different foundation: open source, inspectable workflows, flexible deployment, and an ecosystem designed around interoperable data and services.
An open platform without license fees democratizes energy planning so that operators, public institutions, civil society organizations, and commercial users build on the same foundation.
Inspect the source, model configuration, and complete workflow. Build reproducible studies whose assumptions and transformations can be reviewed rather than hidden behind a closed application boundary.
Advanced modelling is no longer a luxury. Use, inspect and extend Manta without paying a licence fee. Open Energy Transition and other ecosystem players will provide customized commercial support, training, and long-term maintenance.
Designed to scale from a local development stack to cloud and on site environments, while keeping security first. Manta is built following ISO 27001 certified processes and targeting compliance with security requirements such as the EU AI Act and Cyber Resilience Act.
Manta lets you use leading open frameworks such as PyPSA, Sienna, and Antares through a flexible plug-in system that easily integrates with existing business processes and proprietary tools. By building on this mature open ecosystem, you can rapidly adopt new regulatory and technical constraints, advancements in modelling techniques, and AI developments.
Integrate your favorite AI models to explain results, provide quick support, or even enable fully agentic control of Manta. All data and workflow changes are tracked and transparent – the AI is only there to make models understandable and faster to use.
Work securely with your closed datasets, while also being able to work with open, model-ready data packages built from verified public sources. Combine verified open data with closed data while keeping full control of where sensitive data lives.

Open Ecosystem
Manta stays open source; Open Energy Transition and ecosystem players add the commercial support critical industries need on top.
Operators, public institutions, civil-society organisations, and commercial users use the same software foundations, meaning improvements, new features, and bug fixes developed by one immediately benefit all others.
We conduct online or in-house training workshops to help modelling teams move from existing tools and establish repeatable Manta workflows.
We help integrate pre-existing confidential data sources, analysis frameworks, compute infrastructure, and organisational processes securely on top of the open foundation.
We develop custom workflow components and domain-specific features for utilities, regulators, consultancies, researchers, and technology partners.
We offer optional maintenance contracts for organisations that need 24/7 support, SLAs, security updates and controlled upgrades, and predictable lifecycle management.

Quick Answers
Manta is being developed by Open Energy Transition, a non-profit organization that aims to make open energy models mainstream. We are building it under a separate GitHub organization with the aim of passing Manta on to an open-source community governance model, along the lines of other major open source projects.
Open Energy Transition will offer professional support, security updates, and integration and customization services on top of Manta to industrial users. We will use part of this revenue to maintain Manta and add new features to it, alongside community contributions. Since Manta is open source, commercial consultants can also build business models that use Manta, and we are happy to help them to get started. We want to see a broad ecosystem that does not depend on individual organizations.
Manta will support all leading open source solvers (HiGHS, SCIP, CBC, etc) and proprietary solvers such as Gurobi. Open Energy Transition can help select and, if needed, procure the right solver for your setup.
Our research indicates that open source modelling frameworks are nearly at feature parity with proprietary systems. However, a major gap for adoption is a graphical user interface and the enterprise application layer that industrial organizations require to adopt these open tools. Manta provides an intuitive modern GUI, a software architecture built for security-critical deployments, and is, crucially, open source. This not only sets Manta apart, it also ensures that users are not locked in to a product, and can easily integrate it with their existing technology stack and business operation tools.
Using our data converters, we enable conversion of PLEXOS data models, allowing you to reuse all your datasets within Manta. This means you can build on years of existing modelling work instead of starting from scratch. Imported models can be inspected, validated, and progressively adapted to Manta’s open workflows, giving your team a practical migration path while preserving the data structures, assumptions, and institutional knowledge you already rely on.
Although Manta is open source, you don't need to know how to write code to access its full capabilities. Our no-code approach enables you to utilise Manta's full capabilities using our user-friendly graphical interface. The best part? If you feel that any functions are not accessible as you need them via the user interface, you can request that they be implemented via our public issue tracker or our premium support. However, if you know how to code, Manta will provide you with the full flexibility to apply our framework to your innovative ideas and specific needs, or even connect it to other open-source and closed-source frameworks.
Manta offers a fully open-source platform alternative where models, methods, and workflows can be thoroughly inspected, verified, and reproduced. It features an extensible plug-in architecture for custom components, flexible deployment spanning local, cloud, and on-premise environments, and operates without software license fees. To ensure a smooth transition, Manta includes dedicated data converters, enabling you to seamlessly reuse your existing data models and build upon your prior work within an open ecosystem. Like proprietary tools, Manta has optional commercial support offered by OET and other ecosystem players.
While both Manta and Scenario Builder build upon open-source modelling engines like PyPSA, only Manta is fully open-source. This means anyone can customize dashboards, the user interface, or even decide how and where it is deployed. This gives users full sovereignty over their entire technical stack, and end-to-end control over their data. Manta is also built to be interoperable with modelling frameworks other than PyPSA, enabling users to use the latest advancements and best tools for their specific use case.
